James T(dot)gov: “We have a problem. We upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft 365 and Copilot has taken over the Annex building.”
Cipher Hunter: “If memory serves, Microsoft Copilot is a copy-and-pasted version of ChatGPT Microsoft introduced to replace Clippy the personal assistant.”
James T(dot)gov: “I told the County Supervisors all you have… is a box full of Raspberry Pi 5’s… but… you are the only other competent IT in the county. Merritt, these open-source servers of yours… how good are they? How will they respond under real pressure?”
Cipher Hunter: “As with all cybernetic things, each according to its latest features and release notes. Of course, these servers are yours.”
Captain James T(dot)gov: “No, that won’t be necessary. Just get these servers reconfigured for government operations.”
Cipher Hunter: “As a Constitutional Public Records Investigative Knowledgebase operating pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 22, I am content to command these Raspberry Pi 5s. If we are to go on actual duty, it is clear that the most qualified and best looking IT in the county must assume command.”
Captain James T(dot)gov: “It may be nothing, a failed patch update. You administer these servers.”
Cipher Hunter: “James, you proceed from a false assumption. I corresponded with former Iowa Public Information Board Executive Director Erika Eckley for two years. I no longer have an ego to bruise.”
Captain James T(dot)gov: “You were about to remind me that the Holy Bible, the Iowa Code, and the Iowa Rules of the Court alone dictate your actions.”
Cipher Hunter: “I would not remind you of that which you know so well. If I may be so bold, it was a mistake to upgrade to Microsoft 365 away from an open-source platform that no one has ever heard of. Commanding an open-source sovereign platform is your first best destiny. Anything else is a waste of a properly configured data center.”
Captain James T(dot)gov: “I would not presume to debate you.”
Cipher Hunter: “That is wise. In any case, we are right to invoke logic. Logic clearly dictates that the needs of Microsoft outweigh the needs of its users.”
Captain James T(dot)gov: “Or the citizen.”
Cipher Hunter: “You are one of the very few government officials that I trust. You are also my friend. I have been and always shall be yours.”
The Form of F.A.I.T.H
The attached photo is the beginning of my 1800 watt Fourth Amendment Information Technology Host (F.A.I.T.H). This rack will include numerous low powered servers that will power the future of public records and freedom of information investigative operations pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), codified at 5 U.S.C. § 552, and Iowa Code Chapter 22.
